The choice of a datacenter cooling solution is often driven by the available number of square metres or the energy density per rack. The approach taken by Minkels, with datacenter volume (m3) as its starting point, leads faster to the most suitable solution for any specifi c situation.


“The traditional approach tends to limit your options and often paves the way for wrong choices or extended implementation projects,” says Jeroen Hol, Chief Commercial Offi cer (CCO) of Aegide Group, the parent company of Minkels. “Our approach, which is based on the datacenter volume, ultimately leads to a superior solution.”


While limitations in the volume of a datacenter room barely play a role in completely greenfi eld data centres, around 90% of datacenter building involves modifi cations to existing datacenters or the installation in confi ned spaces.


“Ideally a datacenter should be completely cooled with air,” says Hol. “Preferably via a method such as Free Cooling, thus cooling with the aid of the outdoor temperature, which of course all depends on local temperatures. If you’ve got plenty of volume, then there is no need at all to consider water cooling. Air is practically always the best solution in that case.”


“Corporate datacenters are often established in the basements of a company, and every space is diff erent. Most datacenters are thus by no means ideal. In such situations it is also important to take the volume as starting point .”


A combination of cooling by air and water may sometimes be the most practical alternative. “From a thermodynamic point of view, however, it is always better to have a single heat transfer regime,” says Hol. “The addition of a second cooling circuit means there are two heat transfer moments, each of which leads to heat loss. This option should therefore only be considered when absolutely necessary.”


Cooling can also take place at chip level. In that case the volume of a datacenter pays no role whatsoever. Hol: “At present, only 2% of the servers worldwide are cooled at chip level. What’s more, it will take several decades before all the technology in a datacenter, including switches and routers, is suitable for chip cooling.”


No matter what cooling solution you choose, appropriate monitoring is essential to achieve operational excellence in datacenter operations.
