Yahoo! is not committed to any particular IT vendor, using equipment from a variety of suppliers. “We’re very competitive on the server front, so we use a multitude of server and storage manufacturers,” Noteboom says. Environments in the company’s data centers are virtualized. “Virtualization and utility computing is key to us.”
LOCKPORT – IT’S JUST THE BEGINNING Much of Yahoo!’s infrastructure is still housed in numerous commercial wholesale and retail colocation data centers around the world. But the company has been “aggressively” building its own mission-critical facilities with the goal of eventually transitioning all its equipment into self-owned and self-operated data centers. The majority of the infrastructure is already in the company’s own facilities.
Yahoo! is on a path to meet a commitment it made in June 2009 to cut its overall carbon emissions by 40% by 2014, and Noteboom says Lockport is among many ongoing projects that will assist the company in hitting that target.
Lockport is not the only data center project that Yahoo! is currently developing. “We have projects on three continents going on at the same time,” Noteboom says. “We have expansions going in all our key areas in the US right now, and we’ve got [new] data center construction in Europe and Asia.”
The Lockport data center will be supporting all Yahoo! online properties that provide services to users in the US. It will also serve the company’s own employees.

The Lockport data center is a fi fth-generation design for Yahoo!.
Noteboom says there is “huge opportunity” to gain in each of these three areas with every new design. “We’ve been evolving our design on every project we do,” he says.
The progress in data center design is driven by progress of the commoditization of data bit production. “It’s reshaping this entire business and the way in which we build things.”
