FOCUS GREEN UPDATE
Issue 10, June/July
STILL IMMINENT The US Environmental Protection Agency is expected to make an announcement soon regarding the fi nal standards for the forthcoming Energy Star certifi cation for data centers

Although there is an Energy Star rating for servers, the EPA admits that creating one for storage systems is considerably more complex. Unlike most servers, storage systems tend to boast dual-power supplies for back-up and this makes power consumption a more diffi cult component to measure. Other variables to be considered include confi guration, controllers and management software.
For the last four months, the EPA been collecting data from various data centers and storage vendors to understand the interactivity between storage hardware and software, confi guration and energy effi ciency, active and idle state performance and sensitivity to single- confi guration changes.
The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) is working closely with the EPA. Last month in Europe, SNIA Europe announced its endorsement of the European Union’s Code of Conduct for Data Centers, a voluntary commitment by European data centre operators as well as IT, software and supporting equipment vendors, to improve the understanding of energy demand within the data center, raising awareness and recommending energy-efficient best practices and targets.
CISCO GETS GREENPEACE APPROVAL Cisco has ousted IBM as the greenest technology company on the block in the latest outing of the Cool IT Challenge Leaderboard from environmental group Greenpeace. Cisco managed to double its previous score to take the top spot, while IBM dropped to third behind Ericsson. The leader board tracks the efforts of IT companies to reduce the carbon footprint, drive green energy policies and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

he Environment Protection Agency (EPA) said it was close to finishing the Energy Star standard for data centers in February, but lately it has
Greenpeace campaigner Casey Harrell comments: “Leaders such as Cisco are actively investing in climate solutions, while others are merely signalling commitments, hoping that lofty words are as good as action. To play a signifi cant role in helping make sure global greenhouse gas emissions peak by 2015, IT companies need to deliver on the promise that their technology can provide substantial climate savings today.”
IBM dropped to third place and was followed by HP and Fujitsu in fi fth, which received a special nod for being the fi rst company to outline a credible goal for the carbon savings it can offer customers.
Google, which received top marks for its advocacy of the green agenda, was placed sixth overall, largely due to a lack of transparency with regard to its own emission-reduction targets. However, Google got a special mention for its PowerMeter tool, which provides real- time energy-consumption information to customers. “Google and other IT companies can help shape policies to rapidly deploy IT solutions to slow and/or reverse climate change, while increasing their revenue and growing in a more responsible way,” Harrell concludes.
EVOSWITCH DOUBLES DATA CENTER SIZE EvoSwitch announced plans to more than double the size of its ‘green’ Amsterdam data center from 45,000 square feet to 100,000 square feet. The third development stage will target energy savings in the already energy- effi cient data center, which carries a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.5 the fi rm said. The new center will target a rating to 1.2.
The expansion will be complete by Q3 this year and the additional 5,000 square metres will accommodate 800 data center racks. 19in racks will be installed in 25 corridors.
The modular approach developed by supplier DataXenter involves installation of various modular data center boxes, each of which will
be locally equipped with two 160kW UPS.
Current EvoSwitch customers include Wikipedia, Logica and Codemasters.
