HSBC’S SWISS BRANCH REVEALS THE TRUE SCALE OF MAJOR INFORMATION BREACH AT DATA CENTER
The Swiss branch of HSBC revealed the shocking scale of a major information security breach at its data center, following the return of some of the data to the bank by the Swiss authorities.
Three years ago, a former IT employee allegedly stole the account information of about 15,000 clients who had active accounts with the bank’s Geneva-based branch. Another 9,000 accounts that had been closed by the time the incident occurred were also thought to be affected. According to MarketWatch, the bank had previously reported that less than 10 clients
francs on security system upgrades since the incident. Clients affected were limited to those who had accounts in Switzerland before October 2006, HSBC said.

“We deeply regret this situation and unreservedly apologise to our clients for this threat to their privacy,” says chief executive of HSBC Private Bank (Suisse) Alexandre Zeller. “We are determined to protect our clients’ interests and are taking every necessary measure to do so, actively contacting all our clients with Swiss-based accounts.”
Data center services provider Equinix more than doubled its capacity in Geneva, Switzerland, after it opened the doors of its second IBX facility in that city. The purpose-built GV2 IBX
data center is Equinix’s fi fth in the country. The fi rst phase adds 380 cabinets to Equinix’s data center capacity in Geneva, and when fully built-out will total 48,400 gross sq ft (4,500 gross square metres), with capacity for 760 cabinet equivalents. According to Equinix, the
addition more than doubles its footprint in the city, making it Equinix’s largest IBX in Switzerland. It said that further phases will be opened during 2010, but would be timed to refl ect market demand.
The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Europe announced its endorsement of the European Union’s Code of Conduct for Data Centres.

By throwing its weight behind the code, SNIA Europe will recommend guidelines on implementing the Code’s best practices, as well as develop education and information programmes to help data center administrators meet and maintain the targets outlined in the Code.
SunGard acquired 365 Hosting, a Dublin, Ireland, hosting infrastructure provider. Hosting 365 provides managed services and private cloud at its 25,000 sq ft data center in Park West, Dublin. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. “The deal has major benefi ts

IT services, business continuity and disaster recovery solutions.
Interxion has completed the pan-European accreditation for the ISO 27001 (Information Security and Business Continuity) standard for all 11 of its European country operations. In addition, Interxion also
announced that its European Customer Service Centre (ECSC) team has now been trained in ITIL v3, the latest Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) standard.
Cancer Research UK picked Interxion as its colcoation partner, following a competitive tender involving ‘all the colocation providers within the M25 that had both the space required and the ability to deliver within a set timescale.’ In 2008, the charity chose to outsource after it compared the cost of a retrofi t of its existing
data center with using different types of colocation facilities.
Accenture was signed by UK commercial broadcaster ITV plc to supply core IT service management, infrastructure and application management services. Under the deal, ITV will move its desktop services, help desk and data center management to Accenture later this year.
The London Stock Exchange started transferring its share trading operations to the Millennium IT platform and is gearing up to go live on 13 September this year. The project’s Phase 1 is underway. The LSE has sent technical specifi cations to companies that link into the exchange and set up a website to keep clients up to date with the project and any changes. In March, the LSE will give partners access to the non-live test environment.
