HP AND MICROSOFT‘S $250M HOOK UP TO DELIVER INTEGRATED ENTERPRISE IT OFFERING

Microsoft and HP announced an expanding partnership to provide a full-stack solution of hardware and software, designed and pre- tested to support private clouds in customers’ data centers.

The deal is an expansion of an already long and close partnership between the two companies on many levels. The two are investing “$250m in incremental dollars” into the programme to align their engineering and services teams who will work on the new joint solutions, said HP CEO Mark Hurd.

The solution – which as yet has no set launch date – will be pre-made, tested and shipped with Microsoft applications such as SQL Server or Exchange. Microsoft has committed to integrate HP’s Insight Software and Business Technology Optimization software portfolio with Microsoft’s System Center suite, for virtual service management.

This is the latest example in the trend of companies pushing to provide as full an enterprise IT solution as possible: a similar announcement was made by Cisco and EMC in November, when the two companies said they would provide a pre-made solution combining Cisco’s Unified Computing System with EMC’s storage hardware and VMware’s virtualisation platform. 

UK IT MANAGERS: WE HAVE NO MONEY A January survey of UK firms by the National Computing Centre (NCC) has found virtualisation topping the bill for delivering cost reductions as pressure on budgets continues among half of those polled.

Some 28 of the 100 companies surveyed confirmed their IT budgets had suffered “significant” cuts – while it must be said 21 only had to make limited cuts and 19 did not

experience cost reductions at all. Yet overall pressure to reduce cost and budgets as well as delayed projects are still common features of many technology departments, suggests the study.

A third (33) of the businesses surveyed expect their technology spending to be slashed even further, while 47 think their financial resources will remain the same and a mere 13 of the 100 are expecting to see an increase in their IT budget.

Some 38 of those polled said they are delaying hardware upgrades, 33 are postponing software refreshes and 29 are putting network infrastructure updates on hold. Use of virtualisation is seen as an important way of dealing with such ongoing financial constraints, with 55 respondents citing the technology as important in their plans. 
