FOCUS INDUSTRY

TAKING IN A WORLD VIEW

What was the key development in 2009? And what is the best thing that could happen to the data center sector in 2010? Two questions. Many answers. This is what the experts told us.

Chris Malone Thermal technologies architect , Google

What was the most important data center development of 2009? The substantial increase in publicly reported PUE data, combined with measurement and reporting methodologies from the EPA and the Green Grid. The information should give data center designers and operators targets for new facilities and upgrades that should substantially improve the efficiency of the typical data center.

What single advance would most positively impact the data center sector in 2010? Target PUE values for new data centers established by government agencies in co-operation with industry groups.

Don Beaty PE President, DLB Associates

What was the most important data center development of 2009? Momentum towards cloud computing

What single advance would most positively impact the data center sector in 2010?

Move towards liquid cooled computers resulting in fulltime economizer use regardless of climate.

Eric Shapiro Chief Executive Officer, Telx

What was the most important data center development of 2009? A broader focus on efficiency in the planning, construction and operation of today’s data centers. Operators are making concerted efforts to do more with the power they have. Recent legislation and energy programmes have been designed specifically to promote and reward this behaviour. Thought leaders have come together to refine standards, measures and best practices in an effort to try to foster these improvements.

What single advance would most positively impact the data center sector in 2010?

Advancements in data center management and automation systems, which provide real-time view into data center performance against design goals. The integration of floor layout, equipment installation, environmental controls and BMS. EPMS systems continue to be refined and should allow operators the ability to recognise greater space and power efficiencies.

Ken Uhlman Director, Data center business development, Eaton

What was the most important data center development of 2009? The global economic recession forced many organisations to focus on the most important issues for their business, resulting in many of the ‘nice-to-have’ projects or activities being sidelined or eliminated. This may have included virtualisation, data center consolidation, convergence, etc. In retrospect, many organisations are now operating more efficiently than before.

What single advance would most positively impact the data center sector in 2010?

In 2010, continued convergence of IT and facilities, including organisational

structure, behaviour and technologies to optimise the organisation. Without these two groups working collaboratively, inefficiencies may be transferred from one group to another, instead of solving the issues for their business.

Lex Coors Director of Engineering, Interxion

What was the most important data center development of 2009? The Green Grid communicating to the whole world, creating one data center community with a common energy issue, to be solved under the same umbrella. PUE is now the only metric that will appear all over the world. Where governments just try to defend their area, the Green Grid just tries to tell us that we should improve ourselves. To do this they have provided the world with a lot of best practice guidelines.

What single advance would most positively impact the data center sector in 2010? A true pick-up of world industry will definitely have the most positive impact on the datacenter sector. Without economic growth the energy usage drops but without improving efficiency of use. As the economy picks up, we add the climate issue, economic growth will give us the money we need to solve it.
