Data Center EvoSwitch Gains Substantial Savings with Minkels Cold Corridors


“Installation of the Minkels Cold Corridors has a significant influence on lowering our Power Usage Effectiveness,” says Eric Boonstra, Commercial Director of EvoSwitch. “Currently we have a PUE of 1.6, which is quite low already, but 1.2 is a very realistic objective in the near future.”


EvoSwitch is an innovative ‘next-generation’ data center with green credentials and a management team that is continuously on the search for further energy savings to be made. The installation of Cold Corridors was one of the first measures being taken to lower the PUE of the data center.


Energy savings: 40 percent Says Boonstra, “Power consumption by IT infrastructure continues to increase, while the amount of power available on the market continues to decrease. We’re one step ahead of this development.”


EvoSwitch was set up in 2006. Free Cooling - which is a low-energy cooling concept that makes use of the cool outside air that is abundant in the Netherlands - and Cold Corridors were among the main energy saving options implemented by EvoSwitch. Says Boonstra, “From the start this already resulted in total energy savings of 20 percent compared to a traditional data center environment. Within two years these savings even doubled to 40 percent, which equals a PUE of 1.6.”

Free Cooling and Cold Corridor “Although it’s hard for us to determine the exact effects of each energy saving measure in itself, I can say that Cold Corridor plays a key role in our low-energy operations,” says Boonstra. “The concept of Cold Corridor, with back-to-back positioning of servers, provides the equipment with more efficient cooling by separating cold and hot airflows, thus preventing any ‘short- circuiting’ between hot and cold air.”

The exact solution differs from client to client and is always the result of accurate alignment of different factors, such as but not limited to an obstacle-free under floor design, rack covering plates, doors and roof construction. Because of its front runners position, Minkels recently was asked to share its knowledge for drawing up the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centers.
