STANDARD LIFE’S LIFT AND SHIFT DATA CENTER MIGRATION
and power – it was the mechanicals and electricals that were outdated.
Neil McPherson, physical environments manager at Standard Life, told DatacenterDynamicsFOCUS: “These things are always stressful, but it was well planned and the migration went smoothly. For the migration itself, we sought advice from third-party suppliers. “Don’t do lift and shift,” they told us.
Standard Life operates two data centers in Edinburgh, Scotland. Its main site was aging rapidly, so a decision was made to put a new data center machine hall in the same building, but on a different fl oor.
As a new build in an existing site – it was purpose-built as a data center in the early 1990s and so had adequate security
But McPherson and his team took the view that it was, in fact, a lift and shift operation. “One big shift over a 48-hour weekend, then a three-month migration period,” he said.
Standard Life set out to update its primary data center, wanting to move from a late 1980’s design, which occupied 1,500 sq mts, to a data hall of 500 sq mts, cutting its power use from 350KW to 210KW in the process.

growing in both size and scope in 2009 On 28 April 2009, DatacenterDynamics hit Milan, with a fi rst event attracting more than 400 delegates.
We are, in fact, seeing an upturn in attendance at all DatacenterDynamics conferences this year, new and old.
Back in March, DatacenterDynamics New York, our fi rst conference of the year, attracted more than 1,000 delegates from the world’s biggest data centers. Research from the event revealed that power consumption, cooling high-density infrastructure and total cost of ownership were among the key concerns.
Now in its third year, DatacenterDynamics Washington attracted its largest-ever audience. As well as informing attendees on the latest methods and technologies for data center effi ciency, our delegates heard about the new public sector data center landscape and the impact of the fi scal stimulus bill. Delegates reported stable investment levels, with a shift to more data center refi ts.

On 27 May, DatacenterDynamics Paris, also in its third year, attracted more than 700 delegates keen to fi nd out how best to tackle issues around downtime, refresh and infrastructure modernisation
In New York, Washington, Paris, Milan, Madrid and San Francisco, DatacenterDynamics is bucking the trend.
In recent months, many vendors as well as data center operators have reported that the ugly economic downturn has created a window of opportunity to allow new technologies to be fully considered and properly evaluated.
During the pre-downturn data center boom the industry was struggling to keep up with build-out requirements, so sticking to tried and tested methods was the least risky option.
Today, increased regulation + scarcity of resources + struggling economy = innovative times ahead.
