to orchestrate patterns and lighting sequences to the set-list, resulting in a truly innovative and integrated performance of music, lighting and technology.”

Other band members outfits were equally innovative; “We developed custom leather costumes for apl.de.ap and Taboo that integrated different lighting elements to reflect their unique personalities. apl.de.ap wore a leather LED suit designed to mimic a graphic equalizer, as well as integrating the Philippine flag, reflecting his national pride and love of music. Taboo’s standout suit complimented the group’s futuristic style with silicone studs to diffuse the light of nearly 1,000 LEDs, moving in patterns across his body and in sync with the rest of

Sally Storey, Design Director of John Cullen Lighting and Lighting Design International believes that although this is a very present issue, being able to review products before committing can help; “As with anything, new technology brings new solutions. It can also provide more disasters! Understanding how to play and design with LED light sources is key. Embrace the new light sources but always see samples and then you can design successful innovative new schemes.” Many people are looking to generate the same warm tone of light

that you get from a traditional bulb, which isn’t necessarily something that can be achieved, although the technology is improving. “It is still difficult to get that warm candle light yellow effect with LEDs like tungsten halogen” explains Storey, “but by playing with different effects it is still possible to achieve an excellent result.”

Many of the designers who do not necessarily embrace the technology of LEDs long for the beauty of traditional filament bulbs. LEDs certainly do not have the same intricate aesthetic as a wound filament. However, Katy Dixey, Head of Lighting Design at Deltalight feels that LEDs offer a whole new opportunity for lighting; “People are looking at LEDs to be a replacement to
