Dear Vince,

It is disappointing, but not at all surprising, that Phil is still quite unable to stop himself from using the editorial page in you magazine as a political propaganda tract, even though you both know that many of your readers do not wish that page to be used for political purposes. I am, of course, referring to the January edition, and I am not alone in wondering whether the message is ever going to penetrate his thick skull and he is going to start behaving like a responsible editor one day.

After your unbelievably deplorable editorial following 9/11, Vince, perhaps I shouldn’t have been surprised that you printed the letter from W.R.Lewis in the February edition. I can only assume that the writer’s salutation, Dear Comrade, and his utter loathing of America must have struck a responsive chord in both you and Phil, and ensured its publication. But shouldn’t the barely-concealed anti-Semitism in the letter have made you pause before you made your particularly distasteful decision to include it in the edition that dropped through our letter-boxes within a day or two of Holocaust Memorial Day?

Yours sincerely, B.Jones

Brian, It’s nice to hear from you again!

Firstly, I’m not sure what political agenda you think Phil has, do you think there are secret meetings of like-minded people, ready to overthrow the state in Ystalyfera? Or is it possible that he is just genuinely raising his concerns? There are of course people, like you, that are happy with the status quo and see nothing wrong with the immoral inequalities within our society. And any editorial, therefore, that dares question our government is seen as extreme.

Over the years I’m sure we have printed more of your letters than anyone else. You might fi nd this diffi cult, so I suggest you sit down. The vast majority of the readers we talk to fi nd YOUR politics repulsive and extreme. Furthermore, in the main, we have had far more comments urging us to carry on with our independent-minded editorials than asking us to stop. We will continue to address the concerns facing us. We will continue to include as many readers’ views as possible, whether we agree with them or not. And certainly it would be a sad day if we were to be censored by anyone with your views!

Vince
