anything over standard definition will be restricted, because many megapixel cameras have limited frame rates. As end users’ preferences switch to HD, with real-time streams, so the hardware-based systems are often found wanting. Because hardware involves expenses such as tooling, long-term testing, component sourcing, etc., it can take a while for manufacturers to deliver products that reflect market trends. However, those who utilise software-based solutions can move much faster. Whilst there is still a need for long-term testing, the process of tooling is removed, as is sourcing and testing components, enforcing new quality control procedures at factory level, developing new test rigs, etc.. More importantly, when a software-based system is upgraded, those who have invested in it at an earlier stage also benefit, because upgrades can be made available. Often, if a hardware product is found to be limited as technologies evolve, it will remain limited for its entire lifecycle.
VMS options
Some shy away from the whole VMS sector because they immediately feel that such solutions are not of the security sector. That’s actually a misapprehension, because for many years the more complex solution-based offerings from the video surveillance sector’s pure-security market leaders have been software-based. It is true that on the surface, many of the new VMS suppliers do appear to wear IT hats, but scratch the surface of the leading VMS options and they’re pure security with regards to functionality and features! They also allow you to decide where the bias lies: with megapixel or HD video. Software, in itself, has benefits. It is quick
to upgrade, flexible, simpler to interface with other solutions, and shares commonality with regard to operating platforms. It can enhance the user experience, and is hugely customisable to allow users to leverage the features and functions they need. In a time when an increasing number of manufacturers are offering HD devices that
utilise networked video, there is a need for video management solutions to interface with a wide range of cameras and codecs. Despite the best effort of various interoperability organisations, in order to benefit from the full functionality of the various devices, the management system must be able to use complete drivers and active controls. Implementation of these into a software- based model is fast and simple when compared with hardware alternatives. It is this interoperability that delivers an ability to create open systems. Because the software supplier is selling you a licenced product, which is clearly defined as an interface with a specific device used in conjunction with their software system, it has to work. If it doesn’t, it is the responsibility of the software vendor to solve the issue. It also must be remembered that many
camera and codec manufacturers belong to the world of surveillance hardware. Whilst they might not be willing to share protocols and control elements with competitive manufacturers, they are more open to supplying these to software vendors, which in turn helps with ensuring that software solutions are forwards-compatible. The ability to create solutions using the best possible capture and display devices, coupled with the fact that it is the software creators’ responsibility to make the interface functional, is enough to force software-based solutions to the fore. Also, where a licenced model is followed, the need for third-party specifications – and all the confusion they can present - is negated.
In summary
The fact that software-based solutions can deliver an open platform system that is quick to update, and that supports a wider range of devices than hardware solutions, gives it something of an edge. The reality is that if you want a system that is open with regard to supported devices, and you want to realise the benefits those devices deliver, VMS solutions do offer a credible and flexible option!
