Alice C. (Cooney) Hunt

Alice C. (Cooney) Hunt, 68, having succumbed to lung cancer after a short but fierce battle with the disease, passed away in her home in Windham on February 4, 2012. Peter Joseph and Molly Cooney blessed the

Obituary Obituaries

Town of Arlington, MA, with Alice on May 26, 1943, where she grew up with her sisters Margaret and Mary. It only took a few months for Tim and Alice to fall in love, and in September of 1971, they married, moving a few years later from

Malden, MA, to Windham. Alice was a fixture at the Windham Town Hall, making immediate friends with all of her coworkers and customers, providing a charm that was all her own. Alice spent most of her time creating memories in her kitchen with family, close friends, and anyone who was lucky enough to sit at the table, most of the time while doing a crossword puzzle, playing cribbage, and drinking “Dunkin Donuts coffee.” A wit only matched by her intellect, as a lover of the English language, she would redline this obituary if she were reading it. She mothered many more than her own children and always helped those in need. A stranger to boredom, Alice spent her free hours gardening, knitting, entertaining, cooking, and playing golf and tennis. There was never a plant that she couldn’t coax into growing, and her knit-work continues to warm the bodies and hearts of those that received them. Alice is survived by her husband, Tim Hunt; her two children and their spouses, Stephanie and Jeremy Hines and Christopher and Cindy Hunt; her grandchildren, Tristam and Antigone Hines; her sister, Margaret; her many nephews and nieces; her dog, Molly; and her innumerable friends. Her sister, Mary, and her parents predecease her. The family would like to thank all of those that provided support, time, food and prayer as Alice made her transition. A special thanks to all those that made Alice’s life so full and happy. Her Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Matthew’s Parish, 2 Searles Road, Windham, on Saturday, February 18 at 11 a.m. The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations in Alice’s memory be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or stjude.org/donate. Arrangements are under the care of the Douglas and Johnson

Funeral Home, 214 Main Street, Salem. To send a message of condolence to the family, please view the obituary at www. douglasandjohnson.com.

Large Turnout for Wolverines Football and Cheer Registration

Season. The registrants filled the hallway leading to the Windham High School on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. “This year the Wolverines will expand their football program from three teams to five,” said Football Director Kyle McInnis. “The program will consist of a second and third grade combined team and individual teams for fourth through seventh grade.” Last year, the Wolverines had a combined team at the fourth and fifth grade level and no seventh grade team. “We are very pleased to continue with our program expansion in just the second year,” said President Jim Williams. “There has been an incredible demand virtually at all grade levels, and we view this as a compliment and a testament to what we achieved in last year’s inaugural season.” The Cheer Program will maintain last year’s 5-squad structure.

Windham JVs Fall Short on Road

submitted by Alex Ward The Windham Junior Varsity boys’ basketball team mounted a second half comeback against host Souhegan, but it was not enough to secure the victory. The Jaguars battled back in the second half, overcoming a 15 point half time deficit, to come within four points during the fourth quarter. In the end Souhegan was victorious with a final score of 56 to 49. Zach Breton and Mark Shamon led Windham in scoring with 11 points apiece. Joe Frake chipped in nine points. Zach Hennessey added eight points. Clay Gill was a bright spot for the Jaguars off the bench contributing six points and solid defense. Andrew Kalil was also strong for the Jaguars on both ends of the floor. Windham’s record stands at nine wins and five losses.

“We are very happy with our registration numbers,” Kim Oliveira commented as she pointed to dozens of would-be cheerleaders standing in line. “We came out with really strong numbers in our first season and it appears we’ll have another successful registration this year.” All registrants were notified earlier this week of whether or not they were placed on a team or squad. Some football registrants had to be placed on a wait-list due to limited roster spots. For more information and updates on Wolverines’ news go to www. windhamwolverines.org.
