he hotel is the soul of Mardi Gras, and a welcome retreat for a y tn traveler. Carefully renovated in the 1980s and ‘90s, the art deco theme resonates a cool, modern vibe, and visions of travelers bustling about in the 1920s fi ll my mind, as I sit at a corner table sipping coff ee with my brunch companion, owner of the Tremont (and much of downtown Galveston), George P. Mitchell.

of the Tremont’s renovation, describing the challenges he faced when trying to maintain structural integrity while attempting to meet new building regulations. “It wasn’t easy, you know. All the laws these days, you can hardly get anything accomplished it seems.” I smile and wonder what it was like for this businessman all those years ago, before so many laws and restrictions entangled the free- spirited entrepreneur.
