London marathon organisers in bid to run London festival of cycling

The organisers of the London marathon have confirmed that they plan to bid for the running the new cycling festival announced last month to be held in London from 2013 as part of the London2012 legacy.

Day one of the two-day festival will feature eight miles of closed roads for 70,000 cyclists of all abilities, who will be able to enjoy a day cycling in the capital without running the risk of being unceremoniously mown down by someone with an engine and an important meeting to get to / delivery to make.

Day two will offer a chance to club cyclists to take to a 160km route alongside the likes ofMark Cavendish and BradleyWiggins.

“It's such a great fit for us,” a spokesperson for the London marathon didn't say. “We have extensive experience of putting on a huge, annual event in the capital, on closed roads, with massive crowds and thousands and thousands of highly tuned athletes all dressed up as teddy bears, pantomime horses, superheroes and of course Homer Simpson. We know what it takes to make such an event a success. Most importantly we can sort out any costumeMark Cavendish might want. We have great links with the country's largest fancy dress outfitters and can offer some

fantastic special offers, especially for bulk purchases. If Sky want to ride as snow white and the seven dwarves we can do them a great deal on that no problem at all.

“Also we got a job lot of shiny, foil blankets should they get a bit chilly.”

StanWannabe, of VC Could've Been a Contender, welcomed news of the new race. The 38 year-old told the Cycling Post, “I relish the chance to show these pro's just how good I am. I watch Cavendish and Greipel and Boonen and that lot on the tele, and they ain't that special you know? They're just pedalling like the rest of us. I know I could 'ave 'em. I just need the opportunity.

“This could be my big break. I still got it you know. I remember in '95 when me mate Bob Domestique lead me out in the East Dungerspot, U23, males with surnames T-Z, race 3 of 8, round one, heat 2, five mile road race.We had to lie about his surname to get him in.Well he gave me an armchair ride to the line did Bob, textbook it was. HTC had nothing on me and Bob that day. Freakin' flying I was with 100m to go. I was unbeatable in the sprint that day. Unbeatable. I'd have won if that break hadn't got away. Damn unlucky really. I'm going to ride as Daffy Duck.”

British Cycling's proposed kit for the

London cycling festival has hit snags in wind tunnel testing.

"It's a fine balance between achieving

aerodynomic effectiveness and getting the look we want," a spokesperson said.

The first TT of the season proves to be a bit of a let down. Those winter nights when you knew you should have been on the turbo eating nothing but bean sprouts, (but that you actually spent down the pub playing darts with Brian from accounts because he was one short for the match against the Red Dragon and “they won the league last year and everything”), have cost you.You record your worst time ever for an early season ten,

0.015" slower than last year, 0.013" slower than the year before and unbelievably 0.046" slower than the year before that, when you got held up by that over-zealous marshall who had the audacity to save your life.

This sends you into a spiral of tearful late nights, spent wallowing in your own despair at your inability to stand up to Brian from accounts. What is it about him? Be decisive and say "no, not tonight, Brian I gotta go spinning."

Your first road race goes better though and you get in a breakaway before dropping your fellow escapee with 10km to go.

All is looking good until you start day- dreaming about how happy Brian will be for you, and crash into a skip outside Number 42, who are having their pebble-dash redone.

You know, because the 70s are so in right now.
