Winter Series Round-ups


East London VeloWinter Series


Based at the Redbridge Cycle Circuit, the East London VeloWinter Series has had plenty of close sprint finishes so far.


15.1.12


Eagle Road Club’s Phil Hersey drew first blood in the East London VeloWinter Series, winning the E123 race at the Redbridge circuit in London on. Hersey attacked after just three laps of the circuit, and steadily opened up a gap on the bunch over the rest of the race. Achase was eventually mounted with five laps to go, but they had left it too late to hunt down a determined Hersey. Adam French, (East London Velo), took second spot after out-sprinting Tom Neale (unattached) and Dulwich Paragon’s Nick Wilkinson.


In the supporting race for 3/4 cat riders, Chris Stuart-Leoth (I Cycle) secured victory in a bunch sprint for the line at the end of their 15-lap race.

Nick Baker (Zappi’s CC) took victory at a windy Redbridge. RogerMaidment ofEast London Velo shadowed the leader throughout the race and finished just behind. The E123 race quickly split into due to the


windy conditions, with Baker andMaidment pulling away from the field. Scott Cousins (Maldon and District CC) put in a strong solo ride for third, unable to get across to the leaders but holding off the main filed.


The race for Category 3 and 4 riders remained together for the duration of the race until three riders broke clear on the final hill. James Fairbank (CC Hackney), Neal Mackintosh (London Phoenix) andMatt Barlow (Essex Roads) sprinted for the line resulting in a photo finish. Fairbank was adjudged the victor withMackintosh and Barlow just missing out.

Nick Baker (Zappi’s CC) secured a second successive victory, crossing the line around five seconds clear ofhis two breakaway rivals, one ofwhom was his team-mate and club captain Flavio Zappi. The podium riders got clear of the bunch after just four laps, and they worked well together to build up an ultimately unassailable lead. Just after the final lap bell, Baker attacked his two rivals and, with team-mate Flavio Zappi refusing to chase down his colleague, the move worked. Zappi held off the Roger Maidment (East London Velo) to take second.


In the supporting race, Essex Roads CC rider Matt Barlow took the win in a five-up sprint finish, following up his third place from the previous week. Seven riders had got clear 25 minutes into the race, but this was whittled down to five as the pace was kept high. In the sprint for the line, Barlow just edged ahead while Joe Holloway (VC10) took second ahead ofLondon Phoenix rider Neal Mackintosh.

Maldon CC’s Scott Cousins scored his first victory in the East London VeloWinter Series, holding off breakaway rival Roger Maidment by four seconds after dropping him up the final hill in the sprint for the line. The pair had been part of a break which had gone clear at around halfdistance, Cousins attacking first and another five riders chasing him down, including Maidment. Maidment and Cousins dropped the rest of those riders with a high pace, leaving them to fight out the win between them.


Sebastian Dickson (Thanet RC) won the 3/4 event from a bunch sprint, Dickson holding off Joe Holloway (VC 10).


The South East Road Race League is based at the new Cyclopark facility, at Gravesend in Kent. Norwood Paragon CC’s BenMoores took victory in the fifth round beating London Phoenix rival DavidMurrell for the win in the 1 /2 cat race, with Craig Joy (Team Toachim) in third. In the race for 3/4 cats and youth riders, 42- year-oldMarkMcCullagh (Dulwich Paragon CC) continued his consistent form with a victory, taking his second victory in the five races so far. Leigh on Sea’s Matt Barlow (Essex Roads CC) was second to McCullagh settle for the second occasion, and for the fifth time in five races. Addiscombe CC’s Peter StAmour was third. FirstYouth rider home was Jez McCann (VC Elan), in eighth overall.

Conall Yates (In Gear-Quickvit RT) secured victory in round six, riding in the Series for the first time. Yates is better known as a time trialist, and he used this ability to great effect, attacking from the start. After being brought back a couple of times, his repeated attacks saw him go clear and win by more than two minutes.


DavidMurrell (London Phoenix CC) crossed the line alone in second spot around a minute ahead of third-placed Jason Edwards (GB MS Tina).


In the 3/4 cat race, Matt Barlow (Essex Roads CC) finally secured victory at the sixth time of asking, after his string of second places. His win came on the back of victory in the third round of the East London Velo Series at Redbridge 24 hours earlier. He held offVC Elan 18-year-old Sam Bradford for the win, with Junior Sebastian Dickson (Thanet RC) in third.
