2011/12 National Trophy Series Round-up
Paul Oldham, riding for Hope Factory Racing, has won the 2011 /12 men's National Trophy Series. Oldham claimed 247 points over the six race series to win by just 10 points from Hargroves Cycles/Trant/Next/Spec rider Jody Crawforth. Crawforth's team-mate, Steve James claimed third with 137 points.
The series was dominated by Oldham and Crawforth and it quickly became a two-rider series. Oldham maintained his lead throughout the series but it took a superb ride from him in round four in Derby to keep his trophy hopes alive after he lost a tyre on the opening lap. He was forced to chase back through the field, finishing an incredible fifth to keep a slender lead at the top of the standings.
After that race Oldham told
britishcycling.org.uk: “I think I’m trying too hard – schoolboy error that, tub rolled off. I’m wondering if I’ve got a dodgy batch of glue, that’s two in two weeks now....we’ ll be all right!”
Oldham then went on to win round five in Bradford before securing the trophy title finishing third in Shrewsbury behind Liam Killeen and Crawforth, who beat Oldham for the first time in the series.
The women's series was claimed by Hannah Payton ofThe Kinesis Morvelo Project. Adela Carter, WXC MTB Team, took the opening round but Payton, just 17 years-old, fought back to claim round two ahead ofCarter on a slippery course in Leicester.
Round three was won by Lucy Garner, the Junior World Road Race Champion. Carter was second and Payton third, with Carter keeping her lead in the overall series.
Payton clawed her way back towards Carter in round four, finishing second behind the veteran Louise Robinson who was riding her first national event for a number ofyears. After the race Robinson told
britishcycling.org.uk: “This is my
first national this season and for a few years actually...I was slogging along biding my time then the old diesel kicked in - it takes a while these days.”
With Carter not contesting the final two rounds the way was clear for Payton to take the overall series crown. Fifth in round five and seventh in round six being enough for the junior to take the title with a total of 171 points from the six rounds. Second went to Delia Beddis (Vicious Velo) with 135 points, just one point ahead ofCarter who finished third.
Louise Robinson finished fourth overall with 114 points despite only contesting the final three races, recording two firsts and one second place to confirm that the silver medallist from the 2000 World Championships can still cut it with the best on the national scene.
