Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower era America, Kemp travels to Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman. Adopting the rum soaked life of the late 50’s version of Hemmingway’s lost generation, Paul soon becomes increasingly obsessed with Chenault, the wildly attractive fiancée of Sanderson, a businessman involved in shady property development deals.

The film follows a young man named Albert and his horse, Joey, and how their bond is broken when Joey is sold to the cavalry and sent to the trenches of World War One. Despite being too young to enlist, Albert heads to France to save his friend.
