MOTORWAY MADNESS
Bird of prey on your perch held high Surveying, surmising, scrutinising The scuttle of flight beneath your wings,
Heading where, in this Herculean hour
Of gladiators in the arena of speed?
Your ancient dignified gaze Resting on this transient moment Is sanity.
BEVERLEY BECK
Beverley’s poem, so apposite after the M5 tragedy, brings to mind Gerard Manley Hopkins’ poem ‘Windhover’ (1877) alluding to the savage beauty of an omniscient deity, knowing all: suggesting how, in Beverley’s poem, the bird may implaccably regard the cruel events playing out on the motorway below.
