BERT BRUINS - LANDSCAPE PATTERNS Monday 30th January to Friday 24th February
Since being given a set of oil paints in his early teens Bruins has had a fascination with stark contrasts, both in figurative work and in abstracts, and has played with the opposites in the colour-circle ever since.
In this overview of work of recent years he will be showing both West country landscapes (Dartmoor, coastal, the worked land) as well as abstract pattern work. At first these may seem rather disparate subjects, but by including work of close-ups from nature he hopes to show that patterns are everywhere, and that there is a natural progression from seemingly random nature to the repeating patterns of, say, a mandala. It is often in repetition that we recognise and appreciate what is in front of us.
Bert Bruins loves walking and sketching, but in practice, weather and his own temperament often drive him back to his studio. Out of habit more than anything he works predominantly in oils and acrylics, and they do lend themselves very well to the colourful contrasts he aims to create.
Bert grew up and lived in the Netherlands until the age of 25, and has been living in Devon now for some 20 years.

Enraged are a Rage Against The Machine tribute band from Leicestershire, formed in late 2008 and currently touring the UK. Since Enraged became active they have striven to recreate the raw, intense sound of a live Rage Against The Machine show with the same passion which created this politically laced musical collision of anger and rebellion and take into our hearts the message of the renegade. RATM’s message was spread through the rhythms of metal fused funk, and Enraged recreate this music as a tribute because it’s the music that they love and the music that inspired them. If listening to RATM makes you feel calm like a bomb then come ignite with us and feel the funk blast!
There is a late bar and barbecue from 7pm.
Bookings are now being taken for the next publication of the Wharf magazine.

Karnataka rose to the forefront of new, Celtic inspired rock bands, following the release of five critically acclaimed albums. The band’s latest release, The Gathering Light, recently won Best International Album at the World Web Awards in Italy. Winning plaudits from Radio 2’s Bob Harris and Rick Wakeman, Karnataka have performed in the UK, USA and Europe alongside prestigious artists such as Robert Plant and Porcupine Tree. In 2011 Karnataka took another major leap forward with the announcement that Hayley Griffiths, lead vocalist with Riverdance and Michael Flatley’s Lord Of The Dance, would be joining the band. Hayley’s beautiful vocals have already brought her major success winning Best Classical Crossover Artist in 2010.
The band makes a much anticipated return to the stage in 2012 with the announcement of their UK tour. The bar and barbecue open at 7pm.
