Icara, Icara Joanna Austin
Friday 27 January – Sunday 11 March
Taking inspiration from Greek mythology, Icara, Icara is a reworking of the Icarus myth from the point of view of a woman living in suburan England. In Icara, Icara, the stages of imprisonment, flight and fall are a cyclical metaphor for increasing self-awareness. Concerned with notions of the ‘visitor experience’ in our physical reality Austin heightens the viewer’s self-awareness through disorientation and the creation of desire.

The darkened gallery space, housing a double-screen video projection and a mirror, immerses the viewer who watches but also participates in the unfolding narrative as they walk towards their own reflection. This dual viewpoint is echoed in the partly autobiographical video of Icara, Icara.
