the hatches or heading off to the slopes, Chancellor George Osborne gave his seal of approval to the recommendations made in the Independent Banking Commission’s report on the proposed restructuring of the UK banking system. As to whether this was a welcome (or not) Christmas present is open to debate, but as our feature shows, it is merely the start of what is likely to be a long and interesting road for UK banks and their subsidiaries in the Channel Islands.

the January outpourings was the number of companies being listed on the London markets – as an indicator of general economic and business sentiment, the latest numbers demonstrated that 2011 was a pretty tough year – although this may be stating the obvious. However, sitting behind the headlines was the news that Jersey and Guernsey are very much a favoured place for listings and look set to benefit when things pick up again. Another area that may see improvement


this year, with many caveats taken into account, is the property market.
