Invitation To A Deeper Communion #366
Marcelle Martin Early Friends experienced an extraordinary sense of divine power and presence in their meetings for worship that transformed them inwardly and outwardly, making them agents for significant change. The author examines what it was about their beliefs and practice that invited direct experience of the Spirit. She also describes explorations by contemporary Friends to seek a deeper communion with God in worship, suggesting that a renewal of worship will help Friends today become powerful witnesses to another way of life. About the Author Marcelle Martin, a member of Chestnut Hill Monthly Meeting in Philadelphia (PA), has served as teacher and spiritual nurturer at Pendle Hill. She also facilitates retreats to help monthly meetings explore spiritual practices and grow as faith communities. She is a graduate of the Shalem Institute Program on Spiritual Guidance and the School of the Spirit's program on Contemplative Living and Prayer. She is currently writing a book about women mystics who were traveling ministers.
Members One Of Another: The Dynamics of
Membership in Quaker Meeting #371 Tom Gates, "In Quaker faith and practice, the individual and the meeting are in a dynamic, mutually supportive and reciprocal relation." In this essay Tom Gates examines many of the factors affecting the relationship between the Seeker and the Meeting, before and during membership. While a person may be drawn to Quakerism for a particular reason, over time the individual's needs, and the way in which the Meeting community is able to meet them, can change. There are stages to be gone through as we grow into the life of the meeting community. Is it peace we are after? Service? Shared values? A deepening of our faith? What, exactly, is a leading? Tom Gates examines the many aspects of membership and the obligations it may impose on us, individually and as a faith family. About the Author Tom Gates is a graduate of Williams College and Harvard Medical School. After residency training at the University of Utah, he spent eight years as a family practitioner in Lancaster, New Hampshire (population 3000). In 1991, he and his wife Elizabeth, along with their sons Matthew and Nathan, followed God's leading to Friends Lugulu Hospital in rural Western Kenya
