Fire Of The Heart: Norman Morrison's Legacy
in Vietnam and at Home # 381 Anne Morrison Welsh Anne Morrison Welsh tells the moving story of her husband's self‐sacrifice at the Pentagon in November 1965 in a desperate effort to help end a war he abhorred. Quaker Norman Morrison felt led to make this extreme statement in the manner of Vietnamese Buddhist monks. In telling her husband's story, the author also shares her own spiritual journey of forgiveness, acceptance and gradual recovery from life's wounds. A 1999 visit to Viet Nam was healing for Anne Morrison Welsh as she and her daughters met with many Vietnamese who shared with her the extraordinary impact that Norman Morrison's act had on their hearts and minds. About the Author After the sacrificial death of her husband, Norman Morrison, in protest of the Vietnam War, Anne Morrison became active in peace work, especially with the American Friends Service Committee. She also worked for years with the YWCA and with developmentally disabled adults. Now a freelance journalist, Anne writes for two western North Carolina weeklies: The Black Mountain News and The Yancey Common Times Journal. She and her husband, Robert Welsh, are active members of Swannanoa Valley Friends Meeting in Black Mountain, North Carolina. This essay originated as a talk in February 2005 to a Holy Ground spiritual retreat for activists at Common Light Meetingplace in Black Mountain. Anne is writing a memoir in which she shares her own spiritual journey of healing and forgiveness.
