The “Times” - January 31, 2012 Ladies Sweep Week

The Fairfield Lady Eagles concluded the week with two solid wins and positioned themselves for the top spot in District 20-3A with minimal help. Wins over Mexia and Westwood leave the Lady Eagles two games behind district leading Madisonville. The Mexia Ladycats visited

the Johnson Activity Center for a highly anticipated game between two rivals. Mexia defeated Fairfield in the game at Blackcat Gym and the Lady Eagles needed a home win. Jarmaca Brown gave the

Lady Eagles an early lead and Jasmine Griffin hit a layup and made two free throws. Each of these ladies scored four points in the period to take an early 9-4 lead after one.

Fairfield managed to hang

onto the lead even though they were having trouble hitting shots from the field. The outstanding defense had Mexia shooting below a 20% clip as well. Griffin, Tiara Tatum, and Ainsley Richardson ripped off four consecutive from the field to stretch the lead to 15-6 midway through the second period. Ladycat guard Ashley Johnson had a putback that stopped the run and very good foul shooting from Mexia (5-7 in the second) kept them close. The Lady Eagles outdueled Mexia and extended the lead by one, and took a 21-15 advantage into the locker room. The Lady Eagles took

control of the contest in the early moments of the second half. Bree Bossier figured in all three of the first baskets in the early-going. She hit a layup and then made two beautiful passes to Kathleen Chappell for easy baskets and the lead grew to 27-18. Tatum hit two free throws and the Fairfield Lady Eagles 7-14 from the field and led 37-23 heading into the fourth quarter. Jasmine Griffin made the only field goal in the final quarter and the Ladycats made their

way back into the game at the free throw line. Johnson hit a pair of foul shots and Brechelle Beachum hit three of four and battled to with three of the lead. Mexia had possession and Fairfield in serious foul trouble (Tatun, Bossier, Chappell and Griffin with four), and Johnson drove the lane and was called for a charging foul, her fifth and then a technical foul. Tatum hit the foul shot to put separation between the two and won the game 44-38. Griffin led the Lady Eagle scoring with ten points and 14 rebounds. Fairfield did commit 34 turnovers but came away with the win. The Lady Eagles travelled

to Palestine to take on the Westwood Lady Panthers. Fairfield won the contest 56- 14 in the first set of games and took this one rather easily as well 67-29. Bossier, Brown and Tatum all

hit threes to open the game and Karonesha Lowery hit a long range jumper and a two to take an early 17-8 lead after one period of play. Fairfield kept a workmanlike pace and extended the lead in each period. Griffin hit three of four free throws in the second and Richardson and got in the scoring. The lead grew to 31-14 at the half. The first half was almost a carbon copy of the first with the Lady Eagles outscoring Westwood 36-15 and closing out the game. Tiara Tatum led the scoring with 12 points and Richardson finished with nine points and made five of six free throws. Madisonville continues to

lead the district race at 7-0. Mexia and Fairfield are tied for second at 5-2. It appears that these will be the three playoff teams but the seeding is not even close to concrete. Madisonville will travel to Mexia on Tuesday and Fairfield the next Tuesday. All three teams are still in contention for the first round bye in the playoffs. Scotts Batts reporting.

MAKING IT LOOK EASY is Fairfield eagle Bryson Gates, #23, as he shoots for two points in the game against Mexia Blackcats on January 24th at Johnson Activity Center. Eagles Split Week in Two Big Games

The Fairfield Eagles solidified their place in the District 20- 3A standings even though they lost a tough home contest to the Mexia Blackcats 50-49 in overtime. They bounced back and won Friday on the road in Westwood 72-66 to finish the first half of district play at 4-1. Mexia leads with a 5-0 record. Aaron Heers missed the front end of a one and one and Mister Carroll drained a three at the end of regulation and Mexia survived in overtime 50-49 Tuesday night at the Johnson Activity Center. Fairfield had numerous opportunities to take advantage of an off shooting

night by both Blackcat guards Carroll and DJ Weathers. Stellar defense with seconds of lapses cost the Eagles in the final period and overtime. Both teams started a little sluggish but sophomore Bryson Gates took a pass from Josh Brown and Cooper Cole hit a layup and the Eagles took an early 4-1 lead. A pair of Weathers jumpers kept the Blackcats close and the Eagles held onto a slim one point lead at the end of one. Gates opened the second

period with a raining three pointer from the top of the key and built the lead back

to four but Blackcat forward Keylon Watson hit a shot and was fouled to draw Mexia back in a close game. Brown nailed a three and Heers connected with :33 seconds remaining in the half to go into the locker room with a slim 21-19 lead. Carroll and Weathers each

hit shots to open the second half but the Eagles came back from a slight deficit with two Gates baskets and the Mexia led 29-28 going into the fourth period. Carroll and Weathers had not reached double digit points ,which is rare for this dynamic duo.

Gates was fouled and hit

one of two free throws to tie the game at 29. Leon Gray scored to give the lead back to Mexia. Cain and Brown and Cain twice more put the Eagles on an 8-0 run to take their largest lead of the game 41-35. Ike Jones and Carroll made four straight free throws and Gray made a basket and the Blackcats countered with a 5-0 run to close to within 41- 40 late in the period. Gates scored on a running one hand shot following a Weathers’
