Concert at Southern Oaks
Dust off your boots and mosey
on over to the Southern Oaks Clubhouse for another chance to hear some good music in the Southern Oaks Concert Series. This time the event features cowboy singer and poet Buck “The Big Man” Helton from Dallas with area country duo Tex & Mary Schutz providing the opening sets. The full- length concert is scheduled for Saturday, February 4, beginning at 2 p.m. Presented by the Southern Oaks Community Club, the concert is held at the development’s Clubhouse, which is located just north of the Shell Station/Corner Store on FM 416, about 12 miles east of Streetman. Singer Buck “The Big Man,”
at 6 feet, 8 inches tall, lives up to his nickname. His velvety smooth voice seems tailor-made for those wonderful old cowboy ballads and stories. He’s just returned from appearing on the Nashville Cowboy Church and on WSM radio where he was interviewed about his Texas- based music by over-night host Marcia Campbell. While in Nashville, he also taped a segment for the Shotgun Red Variety Show, which will be broadcast nationally on February 6 on the RFD-TV Network. Tex & Mary Schutz are long-time entertainers who performed at resorts across south Texas, Arizona and southern California for many years. Now on the road only during the summer and early fall months, they spend their winters at their place on the shores of Richland-Chambers. When they’re not performing at RV rallies, churches, community concerts and festivals during the summer months, they are busy producing and promoting their own Miles of Memories Country MusicFest, held in Hastings, Nebraska, in early September. They have appeared several times on the Midwest Country series, also broadcast nationally on RFD-TV. Both Buck and Tex & Mary
have several CD albums out, which will be available during intermission and after the concert. Admission to the concert is $10
per person, with tickets sold at the door, which opens at 1 p.m. For details or directions, call 903-389-7586 or 903-467-9545. ______________________

Masquerade Party Camp of the Rising Sun
Camp of the Rising Sun (CRS)
will be having a Masquerade Party fundraiser on February 4, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. in the Corsicana Country Club. Camp of the Rising Sun (CRS)
is a summer camp program for Navarro and Freestone County students who are being served by the Special Education program in their school district. This includes students with a learning disability, intellectual disability, speech impairment, visual and/or hearing impairment, physical impairment, emotional disturbance, and autism. The mission of CRS is to provide
a successful and memorable experience. The “CAN DO” philosophy is highly emphasized as the campers are encouraged to do and try things they have never experienced. At Camp of the Rising Sun, campers interact with each other through building relationships with peers who share some of the same feelings and challenges as they do. CRS
campers learn that disabilities do not limit them. Most of all, Camp of the Rising Sun is about giving childhood back to the children whose disabilities may have limited them of the joy in the simplicities of life, and finding that within all children lies a great inner wealth of success. This year, camp will begin on Monday, July 2nd and operate through July 6th with July 4th being a half a day of camp. Campers who are 5-10 years old will be in one group while campers who are 11-16 years old will be in different group. Age appropriate activities are planned for each group of campers. The camp is free to the special needs campers due to a 30 year tradition of generous donations from the citizens and businesses of Freestone and Navarro counties. To learn more about the camp, please access the website at
campoftherisingsun.org
Because Camp of the Rising Sun
is free to campers, they are only able to benefit from this great experience by the generosity of businesses, individuals, organizations,
foundations,
United Way and fundraisers. A table for 8 may be purchased
for the event, or individual tickets may be purchased (at the door for $125 donation). Camp is a wonderful experience
for students who without your support may not be able to be a part of such a wonderful adventure. Please join us for a night of Mardi Gras Fun! If you are unable to attend the Masquerade Party but would like to make a donation to the camp, please see contact information listed below. Your support is greatly appreciated. For more information
contact, Jennifer Copeland, 254-645-5348 or by email: Campoftherisingsun06@yahoo. com.
