Unknown to the Trojans, the statue was filled with Greek
soldiers. The Trojans brought the gift from the ‘vanquished’ enemy into their city and as they slept, the Greeks exited the statue and in the middle of the night attacked the city of Troy from within. Here’s the modern day version. Stephen Pappas was unhappy with his bank and withdrew his funds. He then opened an account at a credit union and received the option of either a camcorder or a $100 gift card. Pappas chose the gift card. At the end of the year, Pappas realized that the gift card was a gift that kept on giving as he now received a 1099 tax form - he has to pay taxes on his gift. “What gets me is that the gift cards and camcorders were probably bought by the

credit union in bulk so they were probably bought at a discount, on top of that they were given out as a business promotion and written off their taxes, but I have to pay a tax on the card’s full value,” Pappas said. According to tax accountant and financial planner Tyler Buck of Salem Tax and Financial Inc., 51 Main St., Pappas does indeed owe the tax. “If there’s anything good that can come out of this, it is that even though the IRS sees the gift card as taxable income, it is not subject to self-employment tax as are some 1099 forms,” Buck said. There is a lesson here: this is one gift horse that should have been looked in the mouth.
