Passive Programming for Adults

Having trouble garnering an audience for adult programs? Running low on ideas? Have little planning time? Not only are passive programs a means for increasing attendance and circulation, they also help gain patron interest and support for the library. Even better, they are fun to do both for you and your patrons! We’ll share several simple and successful passive programs and displays which can easily be replicated, you’ll create at least one idea of your own, and everyone will leave with enough ideas to plan passive programs for a year.

Professional Marketing @ a Small Library Price

This session focuses on low or no-cost marketing strategies. We will give examples of promoting the library and its services including: using part- nerships to design library logos, how-to videos to use eReaders, using effective displays, using a drill cart team in parades and functions, using library cards for services other than checking out, welcome wagon promotion materials, using local media and retailers, and using social media and websites/blogs. The program will allow plenty of time for questions and idea sharing. These strategies are geared toward small or branch libraries, but effective for larger ones as well.

QR Codes are popping up everywhere – in magazines,

advertisements, and in stores.

Libraries are taking note as well. What are these barcode-like squares? Are they just a fad? This session will provide a brief overview of the technology behind QR codes, simple ways in which they can be created, and unexpected opportunities to utilize them in a library setting.

The Real Deal: A Guide to Nonfiction Readers’ Advisory

Readers’ Advisory has always been an important topic within libraries. Interest in nonfiction Readers’ Advisory has only taken off within the past 10-15 years. This short history will be discussed at the beginning of the program. The majority of the program will take a look at the resources available to assist patrons interested in reading more biographies/memoirs, U.S. and world history, science, technology, and other various nonfiction topics. There will be discussion on how to use the same appeal factors used in fiction Readers’ Advisory to find non-fiction resources our patrons will enjoy.

Selling Staff on Selling Books

Front-line staff don’t have time to promote Readers’ Advisory materials or to make reading suggestions using those materials – right? Tailoring RA materials to meet the demands of the fast-paced transactions at the circulation desk and the competing claims for attention at the reference desk can alleviate some of the concern. Ultimately, though, it’s vital to get staff to buy into the idea of promoting RA. Join two RA librarians as they discuss strategies they have implemented to increase staff buy-in, and how the process helped tailor RA materials to better meet the needs of staff and patrons alike. Join in at the end of the program as it is opened for discussion and idea generation.
