Down These Mean Stacks: Film Noir in the Library
The shadowy world of Film Noir is a world of corruption, betrayal, violence, sex, and despair. Don’t we already have enough of that in the library? – maybe not. Films like Double Indemnity, Murder My Sweet, The Big Sleep, Out of the Past, and many others are great films and continue to exert influence. Film Noir emerged in the 1940s and 50s with a distinctive visual style and a world- weary view of post-war America’s darkside. It remains popular thanks to that style pioneered by directors such as Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, and John Huston along with iconic hard-boiled stars like Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, and Alan Ladd, and gorgeous femme fatales including Rita Hayworth, Gene Tierney, and Veronica Lake. We will discuss building your library’s collection of classic noir films, doing film programming and discussions including tie-ins with important noir fiction, and briefly cover the history and development and some useful resources.

Early Literacy Outreach: How to Find and Serve the People Who Don’t Already Use Your Library
It can be difficult to find the populations in our community that need early literacy information the most. Come hear about strategies to find these populations, particularly in-home daycares, and
what libraries around the country are
offering them. Representatives from Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Ready to Read Corps and Worthington Libraries will be presenting what their library staffs are doing in Central Ohio.

The eBook Experience
With so many different eReader devices on the market and more coming, embarking on downloading services can feel overwhelming for the small- to medium-sized library. How can you possibly know every device and how it operates? Who will be responsible for handling downloading questions? How will you get the word out about this exciting service? Join us as we share our experience with you. We don’t claim to be experts (we’ll leave that to OverDrive), but we will tell you what has worked for us and what has not. We’ll share the different ways we’ve marketed this service, how we have trained so we are able to train and assist our customers, and how we have found help along the way. After the presentation there will be time for questions, and for you to share your experiences and ideas with your colleagues.
