INSTALLATION Feature Signage installation
You’ve won a prestigious sign project, everyone has worked hard to produce the best quality signs possible but now installation looks problematic. Maybe it’s a large or tricky one, perhaps it includes multiple installations such as a company re-brand or nationwide marketing campaign, or you have an overload of work that needs installing and just don’t the resources in-house to complete it all in the required time period? So you have to outsource, but who do you turn to? Sign Update spoke to some of the companies at the forefront of installing a wide range of signage to get some advice on making the right choice. Established more than 25 years ago, Mida Sign
Services is a specialised provider for the installation and maintenance of all types of signage, graphics and banners, and completes projects throughout out the UK and Europe. The company manages installation from specialised one-off installation projects to nationwide rollout programmes, so we asked Mike Smith of Mida Sign Services to explain the benefit of utilising a specialist installation company. Mike says: “Having trained engineers and a fully equipped

van is costly, so it is cost effective to call upon the services of an installation company. Apart from not having to carry the expense of wages through quiet periods where there is little or no installation work, outsourcing also has the advantage of being able to choose a company that specialises in the type of installation that you need. As a dedicated installation company, our strengths at Mida
are our knowledge of different types of signage and long experience of installing all types of signs on a variety of projects.” We’ve all heard stories of installation companies popping up in
the sign trade and then disappearing, so what should signmakers and graphic companies look for when choosing an installation company? Well, a good installation company should be able to offer site surveys and installation recommendations, they should have provable installation experience with all types of signage, illuminated and non-illuminated, as well as wall and window graphics. Installation recommendations and project management may include hiring access machines, booking with retail centres, completing RAMS risk and method statements and all other relevant paperwork. Mike continues: “Every job is different and therefore
requires different skills. For example the local corner shop just wants the sign installing cheaply and isn’t particularly concerned how this is done. But when you get into the higher end of the market installation companies have to be a lot more professional, they must have all the correct certificates for health and safety and staff training. A quality installation company will hold various accreditations and correct insurance cover and the staff will be properly trained with IPAF, PASMA, CSCS, and so on. Reputation also has a lot to do with the installation company you chose; a company that has been around a long time should have the in-depth knowledge and experience to complete the contract. “It’s not just about installing a sign, it’s about being

professional, knowledgeable, experienced and competent, getting the information back to our client as quickly as possible along with photos, signed documents and paperwork,” says Mike.
