The GSM-Railway (GSM-R) system was developed by the International Railway Union (UIC) with EU sponsorship to assist railway operators in achieving their goals of railway network interoperability, reduced operational costs, improved safety at higher speeds, and the delivery of new services for the benefit of passengers and employees. Most western European countries are well
advanced with the implementation of GSM-R on key high-speed and conventional routes, while the newer members of the European Union and many other countries around the world are in the process of rapidly developing plans to follow the early adopters. Kapsch CarrierCom has been awarded the
largest GSM-R networks in Europe, i.e. from Ireland to Bulgaria and from Poland to Spain. Also countries in Africa and Asia are trusting Kapsch CarrierCom with the implementation of their GSM-R networks. The total length of railway
