The 2012 UIC ERTMS World Conference will take place in Stockholm between 24-26 April. The conference follows the two very successful UIC events in Bern (2007) and Malaga (2009). In 2012, the conference will support and help sustain momentum towards meeting the objectives of ERTMS.


The ERTMS Regional application on the TRAFIKVERKET Borlange–Malung line – where a technical visit is organised on 24 April – will show how the ERTMS concept is applied to achieve optimum solutions, even for reduced infrastructure costs on low traffic and regional lines. By bringing together the most know -


ledgeable professionals in the business to speak on a variety of key topics, the UIC ERTMS Conference in 2012 will provide a unique forum to take stock of progress and to publicly present the agenda for the future of ERTMS/ETCS. The theme for the 2012 conference is


‘ERTMS Global Dimensions’. It underlines the undisputed fact that nowadays the ERTMS system is being rolled out around the world and has become a global concept. There is continued demand for making a technological leap forward in a reorganised railway environment, whereby both infrastructure managers and train operating companies (railway undertakings) can take advantage of the benefits of the ERTMS system in the best way available. During the 2012 ERTMS World Conference


the railways and supply industry will come together to showcase the latest achievements of ERTMS and prove their commitment to further development and progress. The technical exhibition will convincingly demonstrate the

supply potential and the application of leading technologies within the ERTMS concept. TRAFIKVERKET in Sweden has kindly agreed


to host the conference and to present and demonstrate the ERTMS Regional application based on the specifications defined by UIC and its members.


What is ERTMS Regional? ERTMS Regional is a low cost control system for regional and low density lines, using ERTMS. Existing ERTMS specifications (class 1) are applied together with the new ERTMS Regional specifications comprising funct -

The ERMTS Regional specifications include requirements for interlocking, RBC, Object Controllers and CTC which are not fully specified in the TSI for control, command and signalling. ERTMS Regional is a cost effective way of implementing the infrastructure part of ERTMS on regional and low density lines. The onboard ERTMS is used as a standard component, which


has been an important precondition in the development of the ERTMS Regional system. This means that ERTMS Regional is a way of implementing ERTMS in infrastructure that meets the unique requirements for a regional or low density line. Not least important has been the economical aspect. The system must give the advantages that are required and also have an affordable investment cost. This is what ERTMS Regional is about.


Project background For several years the need to develop a new traffic control system for regional and low density lines has been brought forward. High cost for investment or operation is often the reason why we start thinking about new systems. This has been particularly true for low density lines. The term low density lines indicates that it can be difficult to make the traffic carry the cost of the line. If the existing safety and traffic control systems cause an unrealistically high cost in relation to the traffic revenues, alternative solutions should be considered. An important argu- ment for introducing a new traffic control system on this type of line is therefore to reduce the cost of traffic management and thus improving the economical viability of operation on these lines.
