Opportunity to boost profits


According to a new survey by vending operator Selecta, tea represents a growing profit opportunity for operators as students seek to replicate their quality home brewed cuppa. “Over the last 12 months we conducted a large survey of hot drinks


vending, which provides useful insight into the habits of consumers. Of the 6,850 people surveyed, tea was chosen by 23% of respondents as their preferred drink.” says Sarah Risdon, assistant category manager of Hot Drink, Selecta UK. “It shows that despite the nation’s coffee culture over the past decade,


tea retains its traditional appeal with consumers who value the quality of a freshly brewed cuppa from our vending machines. Coffee is very popular but tea shouldn’t be underestimated in the profitability stakes, or be an afterthought for caterers.” Indeed, nearly twice as many cups of tea are consumed against coffee


every year (65:35), and though coffee is a popular choice for consumers out of home, tea continues to lead the way at home and is a growing opportunity for out of home. “Coffee has had the edge over tea in the workplace but over the last


three years this advantage has been eroded and now the split is nearly 50/50,” adds Risdon. “People who drink tea also tend to drink it more frequently compared to coffee drinkers, so if you get your brew right the profit potential of tea is significant, representing an opportunity for caterers and facilities managers.”


AVA announces plan for AVEX 2013


Following on from the success of AVEX 2011, the Automatic Vending Association (AVA) is delighted to announce that AVEX 2013 will be held once again at the NEC, Birmingham, from 11th-13th June 2013. AVEX 2013 will be developed with the planned introduction


of several new areas to the exhibition; a hospitality bar at the end of the first day and a gala dinner on the second evening will offer both exhibitors and visitors alike improved business networking opportunities. “The AVEX 2013 exhibition team is working extremely hard


to build on the success of AVEX 2011 and to develop a bigger and better exhibition that reaches all areas of the vending and water industries, with a truly international mix,” comments Paul Howard, chairman of AVEX 2013. AVEX 2013 will be managed by H2O Publishing, on behalf


of the AVA. Peros steps towards Fairtrade Fortnight


Peros will once again be helping their customers make the most of this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight campaign - ‘Take a Step’ - which runs from 27th February to 11th March 2012. The ‘Take a Step’ campaign encourages consumers to move towards


Fairtrade products one step at a time. This can be a simple step, like swapping your tea to Fairtrade, or a bigger step, like asking everyone else you know to do it too. Fairtrade sales hit £1.17bn in 2010, and continued to grow strongly


during 2011. Independent distributors, such as Peros, who specialise in ethically traded products for foodservice, have been instrumental in driving growth in this sector.

The fortnight is always well publicised in the national media, and Peros advises customers that it’s a great opportunity for them to promote their ethical credentials to a receptive audience. There will also be supporting materials to help them maximise the impact of their campaign. The fortnight is traditionally an occasion for consumers to try new Fairtrade products, so Peros recommends that customers are fully stocked across the range so they don’t miss out on any cross-selling or up-selling opportunities. And finally, we shouldn’t forget what ‘Take a Step’ for Fairtrade is all


about. Every step makes a difference for millions of farmers, workers and their communities in developing countries, who urgently need a better deal from fairer trade.
