“It’s great to make new friends but sad leaving the old ones.”
“I don’t mind because it is fun and I get to meet new people.”
“I want to make friends and keep them. I don’t feel confident when I start a new school and I feel that my education has suffered.”
“Making new friends is harder as you get older; everyone already has their own group of friends.”
“Being at boarding school is preferable to changing schools but the holidays are long and boring because I don’t know anyone else of my age at home. I wish that there were some facilities for all children who are away at boarding school to get to know each other.”
While some younger family members enjoyed moving and changing schools, it is clear that this is an issue for many, with anecdotal comments made during workshops indicating that they often find it difficult to settle into a new school, make friends and adapt to different courses and/or teachers.
Some felt that other students did not understand what it was like to have to move schools so often and that Service students often felt excluded as they had to join schools mid-term or had to repeat work because their new school was at a different stage of the syllabus.
