Recognising Young Adults within the Family

“I feel that as long as a child over 18, is still living in the family home and being supported by their parents, they should still come under the definition of ‘family’. It is increasingly likely that a child will remain living at home for longer due to being unable to afford the cost of housing.”

“Should be up to 2 years once full-time education or higher education has finished so as to give time to find a job and save a little money.”

“If you included young adults over 18, at what age would you stop including them? 21, 25, 30?!”

“The parent should be the arbiter over whether or not a young adult is dependent… With university and further education, plus uncertainty in modern life, dependency can come and go, only to return again.”

The issue of recognising young adults within Service families is one that frequently arises when the Federation team meet family members on units. Many families feel that in the current economic climate, the MoD and Services could do more to acknowledge that many young adults who have completed their education, either secondary or tertiary, are unable to find work or support themselves financially and/or to live independently of their parents.
