Making shops secure

Internal security Should the worst happen and the retail premises be attacked, very effective internal security measures can also be installed. Doors can be locked using key or card systems and steel doorsets can be used to protect vital interior rooms. The latest steel doorsets can be clad with almost any material making them all but indistinguishable from their timber counterparts. Furthermore they have a lower installed cost, lower maintenance requirements, longer life cycle performance and far superior security benefits.

Maintenance The importance of regular service and maintenance cannot be overlooked. Many retailers fail to realise that under the safety at powered doors for pedestrian use section of Part I of BS7036 paragraph 4.6.3, it is recommended all automatic doors are examined at least once a year. Failure to do

so not only endangers customers’ health and safety, but can also put the stakeholder at risk of litigation.

Security in practice How to maximise security now preoccupies designers, manufacturers, facilities managers and clients alike for virtually every type of building project. In addition, insurance companies have a powerful influence over what is or is not acceptable (and have been known to insist upon roller shutters for retail premises). The best solutions are obtained when the clever designer and the informed manufacturer work closely together to apply the latest technology and the most effective mechanical or electronic components to the problem. This is particularly vital in the retail industry, whose whole marketing philosophy is based on aesthetic, attractive and user-friendly operations. Happily, there now exists many retail

projects – new build and retrofit, large and small - which are good exemplars of how maximum security can be achieved without sacrificing aesthetics, performance to deter crime in a variety of different ways and, importantly, how they can be maintained cost-effectively over their life-cycle. Security in practice is not an idealist dream, it is here now.
