SLJC Sisterhood stays busy Talks focus on Jewish contributions to Arizona, sports
The Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation Sisterhood will celebrate Jewish contributions to Arizona and the sports world at two of the organization’s several upcoming events. At 10 a.m. Sat., March 17, a Sisterhood Shabbat brunch will honor Jewish women athletes of the 1920s and 1930s. Centerpieces designed by member Noreen Nadler will feature individuals and their sport, and the biographies of several athletes will be shared.
“People tend to stereotype Jewish women and see them primarily in their roles as wife and mother whose home fi eld is the kitchen,” explains Sisterhood President Joyce Spartonos. “These stories shatter that illusion and illustrate that, as far back as the early 1900s, Jewish women were achieving great accomplishments in all phases of life, even in those areas that at the time were primarily male dominated.” The brunch will take place at Sun Lakes Country Club Phase One, 25601 N. Sun Lakes Blvd. at Riggs Road. The cost is $10 for members and $20 for guests. For information or reservations, call Judy at 480-883-9393 or SaraRuth at 480-883-1791.
Contributions to state explained
Ann Polunsky of the Arizona Historical Society will explore the history of Jewish contributions to Arizona at 1 p.m. Thu., April 19 at the Chapel Center, located in Sun Lakes Country Club Phase One on Sun Lakes Boulevard off Riggs Road. Polunsky, who works with the Cutler Plotkin Jewish Heritage Center, will give special meaning to the term “Jewish geography” as she reveals “fascinating facts” about early Jewish settlers in the area. The event is open to the public.
New, former offi cers honored
The SLJC Sisterhood will honor new and outgoing offi cers at its annual Installation Luncheon, Thu., May 17. The event will include entertainment from the Off the Cuff Improvisation Team, as well as a meal of grilled chicken kabobs, brown rice, fruit cups and cobblers. The event is free to SLJC members and $20 for non-members. To learn more, call Joyce at 480-802-4902.
Group donates holiday toys
Recent SLJC events included its holiday Toys from the Heart project, which provided gifts and toys for students at Frye Elementary School, and participation in the American Israel Public Affairs Committee dinner, where SLJC fi lled a table of 10. SLJC Sisterhood volunteers give their time to many local charities, both Jewish and non-denominational. Regular meetings are held monthly from September though May, and new members are always welcome. To learn more, call Joyce at 480-802-4902.
