Community Demolition program helps neighborhoods

To help fi ght neighborhood blight, old homes are being torn down by the City of Chandler under a $140,000 program created last year to help homeowners wanting to demolish property.

“Our staff has identifi ed a number of vacant residential structures that are clearly no longer habitable,” Mayor Jay Tibshraeny says. “With the city contributing to the demolition of these structures that lead to slum and blight, this will be a very positive infl uence on the city’s ability to better sustain neighborhoods.”

The program is available to owners of residential properties in Chandler vacant for at least 90 days and current on all taxes. The owners will be required to provide 25% of the cost of demolition and must maintain the property afterward. Funds for the program come from a balance of unspent federal Community Development Block Grant dollars identifi ed by staff for the program.

Reverse 9-1-1 sign-up keeps cell users informed

SanTan Sun-area residents who have discontinued their landlines for a cell phone may not be notifi ed when there is an emergency in their neighborhood unless they register their cell phone number at www.911alertsyou.com.

The Community Emergency Notifi cation System, also known as Reverse 9-1-1, is a rapid emergency notifi cation system launched in 2004. It can be activated only for defi ned emergencies such as fi res, public safety threats, fl ash fl oods, hazardous material spills, police incidents and endangered children or elderly persons.

“When emergencies happen in a specific

neighborhood, public safety agencies can use the 9-1-1 database to call residents and let them know the nature of the emergency and what to do. But residents who have cell phones are not automatically contacted,” says City of Phoenix 9-1-1 Administrator Liz Graeber. “Instead, they must go online and register their cell phone to receive such emergency notifi cations.” Residents may register up to three devices per email address. Those with more than three devices, or who prefer to receive notifi cations near their work or business, may register with alternate email accounts. To register, visit www.911alertsyou.com, or contact Liz Graeber with questions at 602-534-9775.
