Feb. 20: Presidents Day holiday; no school Chandler Unified School District

CTA-Independence Hawks

Project Zoo Lab – Students in kindergarten to sixth grade can sign up for Project Zoo Lab, a fun after-school program taught by Ms. Laureys. Students will work with Phoenix Zoo staff using a special live zoo internet channel to learn what it takes to be a zoo vet, including seeing “behind the scenes” work that happens at the zoo and how zookeepers treat sick animals. Cost for the class is $69.95; registration is open now at www.CUSDcommunity.com. Priceless program – CTA has been inspired by its Junior Achievement program since opening its doors in 2004. Every class enjoys participating in the interactive hands-on lessons that correlate to grade- level objectives in social studies, language, math and “workplace skills.” Wonderful parent volunteers enrich students with the professional skills they bring to class and enhance teaching experiences. Centennial celebration – To celebrate Arizona’s 100th birthday, fourth-graders had a chance to step back in time and experience Arizona’s road to statehood on a guided tour of the Arizona State Capitol Museum. For more information about Arizona state history, visit www.az100years.org. Sing it out – The CTA- Independence Chorus took a fieldtrip to the State Capitol recently, where they performed a concert in the lobby of the executive tour. The performance included a variety of holiday songs, musical instruments and dancing.

Fieldtrip fun – Third- graders recently enjoyed fantastic weather and scenery during a fieldtrip to Desert Botanical Garden, where they learned about plant adaptations and made bracelets with beads that represented each part of the earth. Students also received informational booklets with activities to do at home. —Sue Bowers
