Young artists, authors sought for Sister Cities contest

Chandler youth ages 13 to 18 are invited to participate in the third annual Young Artists & Authors Showcase, sponsored by the City of Chandler’s Sister City affi liate, Chandler-Tullamore Sister Cities (CTSC), representing the “twinning” between Chandler and Tullamore, Ireland. The deadline for entries is March 30. The Showcase theme for 2012 is “Youth as the Catalyst for Change,” which challenges young Chandler students to express through art and literature how communication, technology and individual initiative can lead to dramatic social change.

“With the world more connected than ever, change can occur at a faster pace than ever before,” explains CTSC President Ellen Harrington. “Submissions can highlight the students’ experience with social media, how they are creating change in their community, or how global communication and exchange has had an impact on their lives.”

Young Artist entries must be no larger than 24 by 30 inches, including matting. Watercolor, oils, pastels, pen and ink, charcoal, photography, two-dimensional mixed media as well as computer-generated art are all acceptable media. Entries must be submitted with a $5 entry fee.

Young Authors – essayists and poets – are encouraged to creatively express the theme. Essays are not to exceed 500 words, and poetry is not to exceed 25 lines. All entries must be typed in English, and submitted with a hard copy and a digital copy. Judges will evaluate on theme interpretation, composition and grammar. Entries must be submitted with a $5 entry fee.

A reception will be held in mid-April to celebrate Chandler’s young authors and artists. One piece of artwork and one essay from the Chandler entries will be submitted to Sister Cities International where 10 fi nalists are chosen. From the 10 winning works, one author and one artist are chosen to be overall winners.
