New Vistas students display creativity

fi nished with top honors in the City of Chandler’s 2012 Creative Expression and Centennial Poster competitions. In the Creative Expression Competition, Alessandra Isaacson placed fi rst in the Performance Kindergarten to 4th Grade Category with an a cappella song, “Cancion Mixteca,” that she introduced in both Spanish and English; Melinda Chang placed second in the Visual 5th Grade to 8th Grade Category for her detailed rendition of historic downtown Chandler’s Farmer’s Market, and also placed fi rst in the Chandler Centennial Poster Competition; Sasha Guntu placed fi rst in the Writing Kindergarten to 4th Grade Category with an essay about coming to America; and Madeleine Chang came in third in the Visual Kindergarten to 4th Grade Category for her painting of a Chandler farm. All fi rst-place winners were invited to attend a recent Chandler City Council meeting where they were congratulated
by the Council and presented with cash prizes. “Because of the tapestry of nations represented at New Vistas, our students and their families bring a balanced mixture of cultures, experiences, traditions and interests that can only be described as enriching,” says New Vistas Co-Director Dr. Eleanor Jordan. “With approximately 500 students, we have children representative of over 38 different nations.” New Vistas Center for Education is at 670 N. Free college funding workshop in Gilbert
“How to Pay for College Without Going Broke,” a free fi nancial aid workshop, will be held at 7 p.m. Thu., Feb. 9 at Highland High School in Gilbert. The workshop aims to help parents and students navigate the increasing cost of college education by getting the most money possible from fi nancial aid sources. Participants learn how to fi ll out required paperwork and insider tips and techniques to avoid costly mistakes. Reservations are required for the event.

Boys, Girls Club announces Youth of the Year entrants
Eight candidates are vying for the 2012 Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley Youth of the Year, and one winner will be announced at the annual dinner held at 6 p.m. Mon., Feb. 27 at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre, 5247 E. Brown Rd. in Mesa. The contenders include Anastasia Howard, Apache Junction Branch; Ashley Delgado, Compadre Branch – Chandler; Lydia DeAnda, Gila River Branch – Komatke; Sache Foster, Gila River Branch – Sacaton; Nick Groth, Gilbert Branch; Alex Espinoza, Grant Woods Branch – Mesa; Chantinique Dancy, Ladmo Branch – Tempe; and Adrianna Henderson, Thunderbirds Branch – Guadalupe. The winner receives scholarship money and goes on to compete at the state level. Each local branch winner competing for the East Valley title also receives $1,500 in educational funds.
