Science, technology showcased in Chandler
Explore how science impacts just about everything Thu., Feb. 16 through Sat., Feb.18 at the Chandler Science Spectacular, which brings together local educators, businesses and government to highlight science and opportunities in Chandler. The event is part of the statewide AZSciTech Festival, which runs through the end of February and serves as a platform for stakeholders from academia, business, and the K-12 system to highlight to the general public how science, technology and educational advances are key to Arizona’s expanding workforce and economic future.
Organized by Chandler City Councilmember Rick Heumann’s Education Coalition, the public events are intended to reach adults, families, students and businesses. They include:
• Tech Crawl, 5:30 to 9 p.m. Thu., Feb., 16: Microchip, Air Products, Intel and the laboratories at Chandler’s Innovations Incubator host an open house, offering a rare glimpse of invention in the making. Info:

• Night of Art & Science, 6 to 10 p.m. Fri., Feb. 17: Downtown Chandler transforms its monthly Third Friday Art Walk into a creative look at the science behind the food and drink, beauty, art and inventions. Activities include glass blowing, wood burning, pottery and clay demonstrations; the art of tea, beer and wine making; hand-poured scented candles; kids crafts and more. Info:

• Science Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sat., Feb. 18: Interactive demonstrations and activities by Chandler’s technology companies, Gangplank and the most inventive student Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) projects are featured in downtown Chandler. Student work is showcased from 9 a.m. to noon at the Chandler Center for the Arts. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. a business showcase along Commonwealth Avenue features interactive activities and hands-on fun, while Gangplank, at 260 S. Arizona Ave., celebrates Mad Science for kids.

Sat., Feb. 18 is the last day local businesses, nonprofi ts and others have to apply for participation in the 2012 Ostrich Festival Parade, which travels south on Arizona Avenue from Ray Road to Chicago Street in downtown Chandler at 10 a.m. Sat., March 3. The event is preceded by a 5K, which starts at 8 a.m.
Registered parade participants already include local bands, dance students, the El Zaribah Shriners, Hall of Flame Museum representatives, dignitaries riding in Corvette Club of Arizona cars and local fl oats and businesses.
The parade is coordinated by Chandler Chamber of Commerce, which this year celebrates 100 years of serving the local business community, and sponsored by Thorobred Chevrolet.
The entry fee is $25 for Chamber members, civic and nonprofi t groups, $35 for others and no fee for school groups. Applications are available on the Ostrich Festival website at
