Beau McClellan Private Project - Eclipse

Simply Beautiful

Beau McClellan Design has recently completed an exciting new domestic project in southern Portugal.

Beau McClellan Design is known for creating innovative and visually stunning lighting products. The company works on large scale commercial projects, but is equally interested in creating high-quality lighting solutions for domestic use. Previously, Beau McClellan has enjoyed success in the Middle East with notable commissions in Europe, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Dubai, including completing the largest interactive lighting sculpture in the world, which featured more than 2300 optical crystals and 165,000 LED lights. The brief for this particular installation was to infuse a modern lighting solution whilst harnessing the beauty of the moon and stars, which the client has a particular love for. This private domestic commission is located in the stairwell of a two-storey

60

house, and the company responded to the brief by creating ‘Eclipse’, an awe inspiring installation featuring dozens of glass pendant orbs incorporating LEDs, hung at varying heights to create a dramatic statement.

The pendants use Beau McClellan’s signature mirror-coated finish. This enables Eclipse to achieve a sculptural effect when not lit up, as it beautifully reflects its surroundings during the daytime, meaning that the installation is as beautiful during the day as it is when illuminated at night. When darkness falls, the LEDs’ colour changing properties mean it can create a range of moods from bright and warm tones through to more glacial, elegant effects. The particular colour being used at any one time can completely change the

meaning that can be taken from the installation. “It becomes a very organic structure and takes on different personalities,” explains Beau McClellan. This particular installation works especially well in this particular setting, as the property is spacious and open plan, allowing for the sculpture to be appreciated from any angle. The property also has vast windows surrounding the installation, meaning that Eclipse’s dramatic lighting effects can be appreciated as much from the outside as it can be from within.
