Rosco Beau Rivage Hotel

¬

Serenity in Switzerland

Rosco products help to perfectly integrate modern lighting design with the historical beauty of the Beau Rivage Hotel.

Lighting designer Neil Knowles of Elektra Lighting was asked to create an ideal lighting concept for the Beau Rivage Hotel in the Lausanne region of Switzerland. The overall concept for this historic building, which dates from 1865, was to create a hierarchical lighting solution that highlights the beautiful features of the building whilst playing down the modern glazed intervention with modest, muted effects.

The lighting solution meets all the

requirements of a modern meeting room space, whilst respecting the constraints of the listed building. For example, lighting could not be recessed into the ceiling, nor could certain frescoes be attached, so the company had to work with challenging parameters to mount the lighting in appropriate positions to bounce around the room. All lighting was focused and finalised

by hand, as certain sculptures were required by the client to be brought out for enhanced dramatic effect. The modern glazed intervention wraps

around the existing listed building. By dramatically lighting the façade of the old building, which is actually inside, visitors can see directly through the glass and the extension seems to disappear. The lighting with the extension itself is coordinated and cast into concentric semi-random slots; down lights with gobo projections using the Gobo Top system by Rosco to create a leafy pattern, which brings an outside feel to the inside. All the lighting in the project is recessed or concelled, and limited decorative lighting is provided to further assist in making the whole structure seem to disappear. The lighting solution has been able to successfully harmonise the historic with the

modern to create a beautiful landmark building on the lake.

Lighting designer Neil Knowles was so impressed with the Gobo Tops by Rosco that he even used them to design the lighting in his own lounge; “We wanted to create a softer light, and the interesting texture of a gobo wash over the main living area. The Gobo Top by Rosco was ideal as we could slot into a small standard downlight in the ceiling, giving full functionality without the large and intrusive fittings normally associated with this effect.”
