Session Focus: Spectral Equalisation

Led by Joe Bokelman from ETC, and introduced by Durham Marenghi, the session on Spectral Equalisation during the IALD Enlighten Europe Conference will prove to be essential viewing. We discuss with Bokelman what listeners can expect to learn.

A1 Lighting: Why do you think The ARC Show this year is so exciting for the lighting industry? Joe Bokelman: The ARC Show not only brings new technologies and products to lighting professionals in a convenient location, it is a great opportunity for professional development through educational sessions. ARC is a meeting of the minds for manufacturers and designers. Attendees get hands-on interaction with new lighting technology, but most importantly, ‘eyes on’ interaction. Lighting is about seeing for yourself.

A1: So what made you decide to get involved with the Spectral Equalisation session? JB: ‘Spectral equalisation’ - the extreme ‘fine-tuneability’ of colour - is state-of-the- art thinking about lighting. In developing our ETC Selador x7 Colour System series, we are educating the market on the sheer range and richness of colours now available for design, and how these can be used across so many kinds of applications (urban design, retail, themed environments, fashion and art displays, and so on).

A1: What should visitors expect to take away from the session? JB: There are more ‘tricks of the trade’ to

learn about. This session will give attendees a better understanding of additive colour (as opposed to subtractive colour) in lighting art and work. It will teach them how to use ‘equalisation’ - balancing the colours of light against the colour of an environment - to make things pop or disappear, to correct aesthetic issues, and to act on textures and people. ETC’s Selador Desire Studio HD LED luminaire, for instance, will demonstrate how white lighting made of balanced colours beautifully complements skin tones.

A1: How do you believe the technology will benefit the industry? JB: We’ve entered a moment of amazing variety of technology in our industry – the designer’s toolbox has never been deeper or more full of relevant technologies. Seven-colour LED luminaires join the best of conventional light sources to help us achieve a quality of light we could not have accessed before. We’re learning to be more energy efficient whilst discovering secrets of optimal lighting.
