Cheshire’s Gardens of Distinction Cheshire’s Gardens
I’ve been working with the Cheshire region over the last five years championing the gardens which this part of the country is so fortunate to have. Without a doubt there is something for everyone in this rich and diverse part of England; from historic and heritage sites to gardens only
established in the last few years this region has enough to keep you visiting throughout the year.
The projects I have been involved with to help raise the profile of the Cheshire’s gardens have included a show garden at the RHS Garden Show Tatton Park in 2008 which I designed and created. This was called ‘An Englishman’s Retreat’ and took inspiration from the majestic borders, architectural detailing and fine plant specimens found throughout this county. In 2009 we returned to Tatton with a very different garden designed for Ness Botanic Gardens (see their entry on page 26). Both gardens scooped the RHS double award of Gold and Best in Show and in 2010 we were delighted to open the garden for Ness that had moved from Tatton to be rebuilt as a permanent garden feature within the Botanic Gardens.
More recently I have been working with the Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre (page 21) to help them create a new garden within their arboretum.
The Jodrell Bank Galaxy Maze Garden is due to officially open in 2012 but is already on show for visitors who can enjoy the chalk galaxy swirl set high on the wildflower and turf mound and tour the surrounding seven gardens that take you on a journey of the formation of the galaxy.
This guide is invaluable in planning visits to Cheshire’s distinctive gardens. For me there always seems to be a new garden for me to visit or a familiar one to revisit and enjoy all over again.
