CONSERVATION


All Sporting Traditions events, including the Presidential Challenge of Central America, benefit Conservation, the Environment and well-being of the Citizens in the Participating Country.


• 1997 – PCCA was awarded the prestigious Group Conservation Award by The Billfish Foundation • 1997 – PCCA Committee Members in Panama were instrumental in getting that Country to sign a Billfish Protection Law. • 1997 – PCCA Committee Members in Guatemala were instrumental in getting the government to pass a Sailfish Protection Law. • 1997/8 – The PCCA presented The Billfish Foundation with a $10,000. Grant. On September 30, 1998, the two organizations and the Panamanian Government hosted the First Sport Fishing Economic Conference in Panama City. As a result of this meeting, the groundwork was laid to take the sport fishing industry into the 21st Century by uniting all Countries of Central America to fight for stiff conservation legislation to protect the industry.


• 1997/8 - THE ISLA MUJERES LADIES BILLFISH TOURNAMENT contributed $2,000. To the Isla Mujeres Red Cross Women’s Educational Program. • 1998 - PCCA awarded $3,000. To sport fishing conservation foundation in Panama. • 1998 – PCCA awarded $500. To INCORSMAR, a Costa Rica based conservation group. • 1998 – PCCA awarded $300. To the local women’s club in Flamingo, Costa Rica, to assist them with projects for underprivileged children in and around Flamingo.


• 1998 - PCCA joined with The Billfish Foundation to print release information hand out cards for Mexican charter boats. • The Presidential Challenge of Central America was the first fishing tournament in the world to switch to circle hooks to promote the safe release of billfish.


• Contribution was made to The Billfish Foundation to co-sponsor the International Tagging Program. (In cooperation with The Yamaha Contender Miami Billfish Tournament.)


• Contribution was made to The International Game Fish Association Library Fund. • PCCA participated in the Catch and Release Symposium in Virginia Beach, Virginia • 1999 – The Presidential Challenge-Costa Rica became the first tournament in the world to require the use of circle hooks. • 2000 - PCCA raised funds to produce the Second Sport Fishing Economic Conference. • 2000 – Assisted in purchase of equipment for Brasilito, Costa Rica, school renovation • 2000 – Joan Vernon, Tournament Organizer, presented A.S.A. Lifetime Achievement Award • 2001 – The Isla Mujeres Ladies Billfish Tournament contributed to the Isla Mujeres Red Cross Clinic. • 2001 – PCCA contributed to the I.G.F.A. E.K. Harry Library. • 2001 – PCCA and The Billfish Foundation funded the translation into Spanish of the Ron Hamlin circle hook instructional video. • 2001 – PCCA-Costa Rica contributed to the Asociacion Marineros de Servicios Turisticos del Pacifico, a grass roots group spearheading billfish conservation in that country.


• 2002 - PCCA joined forces with The Center for Sustainable Fisheries, University of Miami,to found the Adopt-A-Billfish Satellite Tagging Program in the Eastern Pacific.


• 2003 - The Isla Mujeres Ladies Billfish Tournament contributed $500.00 to the public health clinic for children on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico.


• 2003 – Proceeds from the PCCA events were used to offset travel and housing expenses for the Adopt-A-Billfish program • 2004 – Proceeds from the PCCA events were again used to offset travel and housing epenses for the Adopt-A-Billfish program • 2004 – The Presidential Caribbean Cup contributed $5000. to The Billfish Foundation for use in research. • 2005 – The PCCA & PCC contributed $15,000 to The Billfish Foundation for use in research. • 2006 – The PCCA coordinated the Adopt-A-Billfish tagging in East Cape, Mexico. The PCCA & PCC contributed $20,000 to The Billfish Foundation for use in research. The PCC contributed $1000 to the University of Miami/Dr. David Die to begin a socio-economic study of the La Guiara, Venezuela, sport fishing industry. The PCCA-Guatemala contributed $1000 to the IGFA Certified Observer Program. • 2007 – Over $20,000 was raised by PCCA events to assist The Billfish Foundation with billfish research in Central America. • 2007 – Joan Vernon, Tournament Organizer, was awarded a Hero of Conservation Award by Field & Stream Magazine. • 2008 – The PCCA became a 501(c)(3) corporation. • 2008 – The PCCA contributed over $50,000 to billfish research through The Billfish Foundation and the I.G.F.A. • 2009 – The PCCA events raised $25,000 for The Billfish Foundation’s conservation work in Costa Rica. • 2010 – PCCA served as fundraiser for Phase II of the Adopt-A-Billfish White Marlin Tagging Program with a goal of completing the project in 2011. Raised additional funds for both The Billfish Foundation and International Game Fish Association’s conservation projects on a worldwide level.


• 2011 – Completed Phase II of the Adopt-A-Billfish Program with simultaneous white marlin tagging operations in the Southern Caribbean and Mid-Atlantic, United States regions.


• 2011 – Donated $26,263 to The Billfish Foundation, $3,250 to Adopt-A-Billfish, $1000 to the IGFA , $1,000 to the African Billfish Foundation, $750 to the University of Miami Capt. Harry D. Vernon Scholarship and $250 to the National Coalition for Marine Conservation.
