Introducing THE AFRICAN BILLFISH FOUNDATION

out to many local fishing communi- ties along coastal East Africa. The expedition enabled the Foundation to set up ten contact people in ma- jor areas who are now helping us in collecting recovered tags.

The African Billfish Foundation participated in the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission’s Working Party on Billfish meeting that was held in the Seychelles in July. The Founda- tion gave a first-time presentation about the findings and the work that our captains and anglers have been doing for over 15 years. We will continue giving our input to the Working Party on Billfish in order to develop a better conservation and management plan for the billfish in the Indian Ocean. The Foundation also had the opportunity to pres- ent two papers at the 6th Interna- tional World Recreational Fisheries Conference that was held in Berlin, Germany in August 2011. Both the Seychelles and Berlin presentations were well received and enabled the African Billfish Foundation to network and initiate discussions to promote the sustainable use of fisheries, their conservation and management here in Kenya and Africa at large. We sincerely thank all our 2011 sponsors whose dona- tions made this possible.

• Expand the tagging program to actively involve fishing opera- tions in the Indian Ocean and the Middle East region

• Establish capacity building pro- grams for local fishermen and coastal fishing communities

• Advocate for sustainable fish- ing practices and development management plans

Here are a few of the future goals of the African Billfish Foundation:

• Research enhancement: re- search on billfish is still a grey area in Kenya and the Western Indian Ocean at large. Very lit- tle information exists regarding their stock structure, behavior and catch levels. We hope to advance or research through use of satellite, archival and pop-up tags.

• To actively involve and work with national and international universities, scientists and re- search institutions in studying the billfish species

• Extend the knowledge about the billfish conservation, re- search and management in Af- rica and other regions

• To continue working with other stakeholders in addressing the issue affecting the billfish spe- cies in the Indian Ocean with the aim of finding a solution that will ensure the survival of these incredible species.

We would like to extend our special thanks to our main sponsors: the Presidential Challenge Charitable Foundation, Rick LeMonnier of Sa- far Oil Field (UAE), Mike Kirkland, Satao Camp, Kenya and Southern Cross Safaris, David Johnstone, Howard Henly Trust and Peponi Ho- tel, Lamu.
