TBF CONSERVATION INITIATIVE in Central America Expands
fifteen year time period. Sailfish CPUE has averaged the highest in Guatemala at 10.7 sailfish per boat per day, followed by El Salvador (6.0), Panama (4.4) and Cos- ta Rica (3.9). Over the ob- served years sailfish showed strong declining trends in Costa Rica and to a some- what lesser in Panama.
Catches of blue marlin were generally about three to four percent of the sailfish catch in Costa Rica and Guate- mala with fewer of the spe- cies being taken regularly in other nations. Ample data was collected to look at trends in blue marlin from Costa Rica and Guatemala and both nations showed in- creasing tends in blue mar- lin abundance. The increas- ing trend was strongest in Costa Rica where CPVPD more than tripled from the late 1990s to the past few years’ observations. Striped marlin catches were infre- quently encountered.
