C.A.M.P. Gator is an innovative leadership mentoring program that pairs University of Florida student-athletes with at-risk youth, many of whom have discipline issues, high absentee rates, and below average academic achievement. The program enhances leadership skills, understanding of the importance of education and community involvement, and practices the message that, while one doesn’t have to be a future college athlete, being involved in sports and physical fitness activities is key to lowering childhood obesity and staying in school. For their GYSD project, C.A.M.P. Gator hosted an Olympics on campus for the kids, allowing them to visit the university and experience “real-time” college athletics and facilities.
