people who want to be considered for CSP during this first ranking period have the time they need to complete their applications,” said NRCS State Conservationist Salvador Salinas. “CSP is a very popular program and I encourage interested producers to apply at their local NRCS office as soon as they can.” CSP is offered in all 50
states, tribal lands and the Pacific and Caribbean areas through continuous sign-ups. Administered by NRCS, CSP provides many conservation benefits including improved water and soil quality, enhanced wildlife habitat and conservation activities that address the effects of climate change. “There are currently a lot of
strong conservation efforts in the state and this program lets us recognize those producers and reward them for doing a good job,” said Salinas. “The funding through this program helps producers make improvements in their operation that can truly make a difference on the landscape of Texas.” Producers are encouraged to
apply for CSP throughout the year to be considered for current and future application ranking periods. Those who apply by January 27, 2012, may be eligible for current available funding. Eligible lands include cropland, pastureland, rangeland and nonindustrial forestland. A CSP self-screening checklist
is available to help producers determine if CSP is suitable for their operation. The checklist highlights basic information about CSP eligibility requirements, contracts obligations and potential payments. It is available from local NRCS offices and at

DCP & ACRE Sign-up Starts Jan. 23rd
Robertson County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Jessica Gonzalez, announced that sign-up for the 2012 Direct and Counter- cyclical Program (DCP) and the Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) Program starts on January 23, 2012 and continues through June 1, 2012. “I encourage producers to
make an appointment with our office to sign-up for program benefits,” said Gonzalez. Eligible DCP participants
receive a direct payment and/or a counter-cyclical payment. Direct payment rates are established by statute regardless of market prices. FSA reminds producers that the 2008 Farm Bill does not authorize advance direct payments. Counter-cyclical payments vary depending on market prices, and are issued only when the effective price for a commodity is below its target price (which takes into account the direct payment rate, market price and loan rate). ACRE protects producers from farm market revenue declines when revenue triggers are met for a commodity at both the state and farm level. Farms that are already enrolled in the Direct and Counter-Cyclical Program (DCP) for a crop year can elect to switch to ACRE before the end of signup. Both DCP and ACRE participants must sign annual contracts to be eligible for program benefits. All signatures of producers who will receive a share of DCP and ACRE payments must be on file by the June 1, 2012 deadline. For more information about
DCP and ACRE, please contact the Robertson County FSA office at 979-828-3338 or visit the web at:

The little calf was laying in the left over hay on the levy behind
the ranch house. He was away from all the other calves and cows. The others had been over in front of the barn for at least the last hour waiting for The Colonel and me to start Ole Blue and the tractor. When we did and started driving over to the middle hay pen, I noticed the calf laying there and he noticed me driving by even though I had taken the lower road in an effort not to scare him in to running away. But he got up and started chasing me!! I was afraid he would go into the Northeast pasture so when I came to that gate, I stopped to close the gate. That’s when I saw him running through the Sweet Gum Grove. I thought, GREAT. He will see the herd moving through the
grove but at a different spot and his mother will be so glad to see him. I opened the gate back up and drove on down the road through the grove. When I came out of the grove there he was trying to get through the fence into the hay meadow! Nowhere near where his mother would find him. The Colonel saw him too and as we entered the middle pasture where the hay pen is, he drove on over to the gate into the hay meadow. The Colonel started to round up the calf but the calf turned and ran the opposite direction in the hay meadow, as if he wanted to go down to the Wild Country. The chase was on and The Colonel appeared to be winning it
even though the calf was still running. I noticed that whenever The Colonel stopped, the calf stopped and started again when The Colonel started. Finally, the calf stopped, The Colonel stopped the tractor, jumped off and threw himself on top of the calf, pinning his legs and putting his hand over the calf’s eyes. I hurried down with the truck, we threw the calf in the bed and off we took back to the cows. Soon, baby and mother reunited and the feeding schedule started. The Red Oak Ranch tries to stick to a timetable but most times, life intervenes!

I did see Mr. Cannon of Teague High School at the Ft. Worth show and he is going to send me all of the details on the Spring Jackpot show they have. All are the nannies have kidded and we feel fortunate that we have more boys than girls this time around. It looks like we will have some good ones for the Freestone County Youngsters to show in the market wether show at the Fair.
